Art, Adventure, and the Power of Duality

The Many Layers of Identity:

Photographer Santiago León’s recent series Story in Frame captures the multifaceted essence of not only who I am—a woman living at the intersection of art, adventure, and action, but other women across these industries. This evocative body of work reveals the many layers that compose my identity: artist, skier, pro patroller, adventurer, friend, and community collaborator. It is a powerful visual narrative that balances creativity with courage, elegance with grit.

This series was born from Santiago’s deep passion for connecting with extraordinary people and telling their authentic stories. In a world where personal branding often feels dictated by external expectations, many have little agency in how their narrative is visually shaped. Santiago’s vision was to bridge the divide between artistic storytelling and commercial purpose—creating imagery that resonates both emotionally and professionally.

At its core, this project is a collaboration between two artists—working in harmony to craft photographs and moving images that reflect not only outward appearance but inner truth. It honors complexity, celebrating every role we as women embody with honesty and power.

Santiago, a talented Seattle-based photographer, first reached out to me last winter with this series concept. After our initial meeting, I knew he could translate this message—one I hadn’t fully realized I wanted to shout—into compelling images. Santiago was drawn to tell my story not only as an outdoorswoman but as an artist.

I’ve always believed in the power of duality. Navigating multiple worlds—as an artist and an adventurer—means embracing not just one identity but many. Each facet intertwines into a tapestry of experience that shapes who I am.

For part of the shoot, we gathered at the Grand Image gallery in Seattle, where I am proudly represented. In a formal, paint-free gown, I stood before one of my paintings, embodying the artistic side of my life. Then, as the scene faded, I emerged again—this time clad in ski gear, striking the same pose before the very same artwork. The contrast between elegance and ruggedness captured the daily duality I live: the harmony of creativity and adventure.

This photoshoot transcends fashion or setting; it is a celebration of the intricate strength women embody. Whether on snowy peaks or in gallery halls, I am whole—dynamic, layered, and unapologetically multifaceted.

Another segment unfolded in my home studio and gear room—a physical space where paintbrushes and skis coexist. Surrounded by artwork on the walls and gear on the shelves, this environment perfectly illustrates that I’m as comfortable wielding a brush as I am navigating the mountains.

The project extended beyond static images. Santiago accompanied me on my annual group hut trip—a highlight of my year where I share skiing adventures and avalanche safety drills. Through his lens, he captured the spirit of camaraderie, challenge, and joy among kindred spirits in the wilderness.

Santiago’s work amplifies my many roles: artist, adventurer, ski patroller and more. It’s a testament to the truth that women are far richer and more complex than any single label. We are creators, athletes, nurturers, friends, and warriors—and we proudly claim every part of ourselves.

I am not defined by one title or role. I am a collection of experiences, each fueling the next, creating a vibrant and dynamic life.

Choosing Curiosity Over Conformity

Throughout my life, I’ve faced the persistent urge to “pick a lane”—to specialize, focus narrowly, and commit fully to one path. Whether as an artist, adventurer, creator, or skier, voices around me insisted that success demanded singularity.

But I resisted. Instead, I embraced curiosity—allowing my heart to lead me through a constellation of passions. I chose exploration over limitation, weaving together every interest that called to me.

After all, what is life if not a series of adventures?

Whether crafting a new painting or carving fresh tracks, I strive to live authentically, pushing past the confines of expectation. The roles I inhabit are not boundaries but expressions of my whole self.

I’m often playful and unfiltered, choosing vulnerability and honesty over eloquence or perfection. I curse and piss in the woods. Yet beneath that spirited exterior lies a profound romanticism and shadow—a depth that fuels my creativity and drives me simultaneously into and out of the darkness. This work by Santiago reflects a solemnity few see.

By choosing curiosity over conformity, I’ve built a career—and a life—that reflects my truest passions. No single identity contains me. I am many, and that is my strength.

The Duality of Women

Women, like me, cannot be confined to a single story or label. We are intricate mosaics—constantly evolving and expanding. Embracing every facet of who we are is essential to living fully.

Through art and adventure alike, I seek to dissolve boundaries, merging creativity and athleticism in new and exciting ways.

This photoshoot marks only the beginning of a deeper journey—an ongoing exploration of identity, passion, and the beautiful complexities that define us.

Stay tuned as the story continues.
